Description
This product excels under hot-weather light. Its dusty brightness simulates real-world ballast seen on Santa Fe, Grand Canyon Railway, and Union Pacific branch lines. When placed under track, the material immediately grounds your layout in a believable, dry climate.
Railroads That Used Kaibab Limestone Rock
Santa Fe and Union Pacific both crossed Kaibab terrain in northern Arizona.
What the Rock Is and Why It’s Different
Its tan-white mineral blend is naturally sun-bleached. Under layout lighting, the material reads as dry and dusty, just like what you’d see trackside in Arizona. Because it’s real rock, it can be cleaned, reshaped, or sealed with diluted glue and misting sprays without losing texture.
Every piece is screened by hand in Arizona. This ensures no oversized rocks or stray fines make it into your bags.
How to Use This Product in O or HO Scale
Use the 1023 Bag ballast under HO mainline track or as primary ballast in O scale.
First, pour along the rails. Use a medium brush or ballast spreader to guide the material between and beside ties. Feather edges with a dry fan brush to create a natural taper. Mist gently with isopropyl alcohol to reduce surface tension. Then apply diluted white glue or matte medium drop by drop to secure in place.
For HO scale, this size mimics mainline ballast with slight variation. For O scale, it appears as smaller fill—ideal for service tracks, older ballast, or desert side lines. Some modelers use it near water towers, cattle pens, and shops for an aged look.
You can also blend it with darker or finer materials to simulate mixed grades. Try layering Industrial Dirt or Ash Pit Gray for variety.
Why You Should Buy Kaibab Limestone Ballast
This product gives your layout the look of real desert railroading.
Each bag supports layouts set in the Southwest—ATSF, BNSF, Grand Canyon Railway, or even small tourist lines. Whether you’re building a museum-quality mainline or a freelanced O scale layout, this ballast delivers the right look and feel.
Why You Need to Buy These
You want real rock, not dyed foam or filler.
