River stones are a popular feature in many landscaping projects and for good reason. Easy to maintain and keeps the weed at bay, river stones provide a natural modern look. River stones can be very catchy to the eye at landscaping and garden centers. These river tumbled stones can be beautiful when they come from a river that flows over a variety of interesting and colorful rock types. River stones could comprise a variety of igneous and metamorphic pebbles such as granite, schist, gneiss, and gabbro. They look great and especially attractive after a rain when the water enhances their color.
A wide selection of naturally rounded or tumbled river stones are available in numerous sizes and colors. Used primarily to weigh down and anchor components, such as insulation sheets, these products also provide a highly decorative finish whilst minimizing damage to the substrate due to their rounded profile.
River stones come in various colors and textures and can have streaks, known as veins, of quartz or other minerals. They are mostly smooth but, dependent on how frequently they come in contact with the water, they can have marks of contact with other rocks or pebbles. River stones left above the high water mark may have growths of organisms such as lichen on them, signifying the lack of contact with water.
USES AND APPLICATIONS
River stones and other pebbles are used for a variety of purposes, both outdoors and indoors. They can be sorted by colour and size, and they can also be polished to improve the texture and colour. Outdoors, river stones are often used for landscaping, construction and as decorative elements. They are often used to cover walkways and driveways, around pools, in and around plant containers, on patios and decks. River stones are also used to create water-smart gardens in areas where water is scarce. They are also used to create living spaces and gardens on the rooftops of buildings. Indoors, river stones can be used as bookends and paperweights.
If the stones are used outside, the sun and weather will eventually dull their finish. However, make a great ground cover for indoor planters and just about any use where they are kept dry and out of direct sunlight. They are also very economical. They cost just a few dollars for a fifty pound bag. They are perfect or projects where you need a lot of stone.
