Why order a sample?
Check the real color
Screen colors and layout lighting can change how gray, tan, red and black materials appear.
Confirm particle size
Place the material near your rail, ties, structures and figures to judge whether the grade looks right.
Compare before buying more
Test two or more candidates together before choosing a Bag or LBS quantity for the full project.
A five-minute layout test
How to compare samples beside the track
- Use a loose test area.Pour a small amount on scrap scenery board, cardstock or an unfinished section—do not glue it yet.
- Place it beside the track.Compare the color and grain size with your rail, ties, roadbed, soil and nearby scenery.
- Check more than one light.Look under layout lighting and normal room lighting; natural stone can shift in warmth and contrast.
- Compare candidates side by side.Keep equal-size patches next to each other so differences are easy to see.
- Choose the full product.Order the same product number in Bag or LBS after you are satisfied with the material.
Same material, different amount
Sample size versus the final product
1 oz Sample
- Same selected material and particle grade
- Enough to inspect color and texture
- Not intended to cover a complete scene
Bag or LBS
- Larger quantity for track or scenery work
- Choose the matching product number
- Use the quantity guide for coverage
Natural-material note: Samples and later orders can vary slightly because the products are made from natural rock and mineral materials.
