Match the Prototype
Use photographs of the railroad, location, and era you model. Ballast colors often change between main lines, sidings, and yards.
Use More Than One Tone
A slightly darker or dirtier material along the shoulders and between tracks makes a scene look used instead of freshly installed.
Check It Under Layout Lighting
Colors can look different under warm, cool, or dim lighting. Compare samples on the layout before covering a large area.
Not Sure Which Color Is Closest?
Tell us the railroad, location, scale, and era you are modeling. We can help narrow the choices before you order a larger quantity.
