Desert & Southwest Model Railroad Scenery

A believable desert scene comes from layered color and grain size: fine soil first, sand and gravel through washes and roads, larger stone at slopes and drainage, then pigment to tie everything together.

Build the Desert & Southwest Scene

Work from the broadest ground layer toward the smaller details. Test the arrangement dry before applying glue.

1

Lay the earth base

Start with High or Low Desert Soil over the broad terrain, leaving natural variation instead of one perfectly even color.

2

Shape water and road paths

Use sand and gravel through dry washes, road shoulders, low areas, and drainage so the scene tells where water once moved.

3

Add rock and final color

Cluster limestone at cuts and slopes, then lightly blend Desert Varnish Pigment across transitions and structure bases.
