Need Help Choosing the Right Material?

Not sure which ballast, scenery rock, dirt, cinder, or sand is right for your layout? We can help you choose the best material for your project. Every model railroad is different. The right material depends on your scale, railroad, location, track area, scenery style, and how much coverage you need. Whether you are building a main line, yard, siding, industrial area, desert scene, mountain scene, riverbed, road, or weathered older track, choosing the right color and size can make a big difference.

What We Can Help With

We can help you choose material for:

Main line ballast
Yard ballast
Sidings and branch lines
Industrial tracks
Desert scenery
Mountain scenery
Riverbeds and washes
Dirt roads and service roads
Coal, cinders, and ash areas
Weathered or older track sections
Club and modular layouts
Large scenery projects

Tell Us About Your Project

When you contact us, it helps if you can tell us:

The scale you model in
The railroad or region you are modeling
The type of area you are building
The color or look you want
How many feet of track you need to cover
Whether this is a small project or a larger layout section
Any product numbers you are already considering

Choosing by Scale

Different scales use different sizes of ballast and scenery material.

N scale usually needs finer material.
HO scale is the most common size for many model railroad layouts.
O scale uses larger material and usually needs more coverage.
G scale uses even more material because of the larger track size and wider scenery area.

Choosing by Scene

A clean main line may use one color of ballast. A yard or siding may look better with a mix of ballast, cinders, dirt, weeds, and weathered material. Industrial areas often look more realistic with darker ballast, dirt, cinders, coal, oil stains, and mixed scenery rock. Desert and mountain scenes may need different colors depending on the region you are modeling.

Need to Match a Railroad?

Some modelers want a material that matches a specific railroad, region, or prototype. Others just want a realistic color that looks good on the layout. If you are not sure which one to use, send us a message with your railroad, scale, and scene type. We can help point you toward good options.

Not Sure How Much You Need?

If you are unsure how much material to order, we can help with that too. As a simple starting point, HO scale usually takes about 12 oz, or roughly 1 cup of material, to cover about 6 feet of track. N scale uses about half that amount. O scale uses about double HO scale, and G scale uses about double O scale. Yards, sidings, curves, wide shoulders, and heavy scenery areas may use more material.

Contact Us Before You Order

If you are unsure which material to choose, contact us before placing your order. We would rather help you choose the right material the first time than have you guess.
