Description

1230 Tan Granite Base Powder is a finely milled, 12 oz non-resealable bag of pure tan granite dust designed to serve as the perfect underlayment for ballast, scenic ground cover, and texture effects. Originating from naturally decomposed granite deposits, this powder retains a warm tan hue with subtle brown and ochre undertones and captures the mineral-rich composition of real granite—quartz, feldspar, and mica. Its ultra-fine particle size allows modelers to build up smooth, cohesive roadbeds or blend seamlessly with heavier ballast grades. For realistic results, spread the powder over the prepared roadbed, mist lightly with water, and compact gently to form a uniform base layer. Once set, it provides excellent adhesion for subsequent ballast applications and helps prevent washout during glueing. Whether used under HO, N, O, or G scale track, Armballast 1230 delivers consistent color fidelity, minimal dust migration, and a professional foundation for lifelike trackbeds and diorama surfaces.

Features:

  • Particle Size: Ultra-fine powder (<100 mesh)
  • Color: Warm tan with brown/ochre undertones
  • Packaging: 12 oz non-resealable bag
  • Composition: Pure decomposed granite with natural mica and quartz flecks
  • Dust Control: Screened to minimize airborne particles

Application Instructions:

  1. Prepare the roadbed or diorama surface by ensuring it is clean and dry.
  2. Evenly sprinkle a thin layer of base powder over the intended area.
  3. Lightly mist with water containing a drop of dish soap to help the powder settle and compact.
  4. Gently tamp the powder into place using a soft brush or foam applicator until a smooth, uniform layer forms.
  5. Allow the base layer to dry for at least 12 hours before applying heavier ballast or scenic materials.

What is 1230 Tan Granite Powder is made out of

Decomposed granite forms over thousands of years when solid granite bedrock weathers and breaks down into smaller particles through natural processes like freeze-thaw cycles, water erosion, and chemical reactions. This weathering typically occurs in regions with exposed granite outcrops—such as mountainous or desert landscapes—where water and temperature changes gradually fragment the rock. The resulting material retains much of granite’s mineral composition, including quartz, feldspar, and mica, giving it a distinctive tan, pink, or gray hue. Because it compacts well and drains easily, decomposed granite is often harvested for landscaping, pathways, and model railroad ballast.
